Mark V. HoganDirector, NIU CPA Review Mark V. Hogan: Mark Hogan, Director of the NIU CPA Review Department, is an Illinois CPA, attended the University of Illinois- Champaign (BS Accountancy) and Northwestern University (MBA-Finance and Accounting). He has worked in public accounting (Ernst&Young), and has directed accounting, financial analysis, and internal audit departments at several multi-billion dollar companies, recently serving as Controller and Treasurer at Nicor National. Mark has taught Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, and Auditing at several local universities, including Elmhurst College, Benedictine University, Loyola University, and NIU. Email Mark. |
Steven D. BlancRegulation Steven D. Blanc: Steven D. Blanc is a certified public accountant and practicing attorney. Mr. Blanc graduated with a B.B.A. in Accounting from University of Iowa and a J.D. from University of San Francisco. In Mr. Blanc's ongoing practice, he specializes in civil and criminal tax controversy and litigation. Mr. Blanc has extensive experience in the representation of clients in civil and criminal tax litigation and in tax disputes and controversies before the Internal Revenue Service, the California Franchise Tax Board, the California Board of Equalization, the California Employment Development Department, and the Illinois Department of Revenue. Mr. Blanc was formerly a trial attorney with District Counsel, Internal Revenue Service, in Chicago, Illinois and Special Assistant United States Attorney. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. District Court for the Central and Southern Districts of California as well as the Northern District of Illinois. Additionally, he is admitted to practice in the United States Court of Federal Claims, as well as and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh and Ninth Circuits and a member of the Federal Trial Bar. Mr. Blanc has served as Adjunct Professor, Northwestern University, University College in the Accounting Department as well as Adjunct Professor, Golden Gate University, Graduate School of Tax prior to joining NIU. Mr. Blanc has published articles related to tax procedure and litigation in the California Tax Lawyer. He is pleased to be full time faculty at NIU currently teaching Partnership Tax, Advanced Corporate Tax, and Accounting Periods and Methods in the MSA and MST program.Mr. Blanc has been teaching selected sections of NIU's CPA since 2010. Lisa CapozzzoliAuditing & Attestation Lisa Capozzoli: CPA and Accounting Professor at the College of DuPage. Lisa received a Bachelors of Science in Accountancy in 1986, and a Masters in Accountancy in 1987, from DePaul University, graduating with high honors. While a student at DePaul Lisa was awarded the 1985 "Who's Who Among America's Students," of which all nominations came from DePaul faculty. From 1987 to 1990 Lisa worked for Price Waterhouse (now part of PriceWaterhouseCoopers), where she was promoted one year early to Senior Staff Auditor. While at Price Waterhouse Lisa was responsible for planning, conducting, and evaluating financial audits of clients in varying public and private industries including manufacturing, legal engineering, and consulting. After realizing her call was to become a teacher, Lisa worked as a full-time instructor in DePaul University's School of Accountancy from 1990-1994, where she taught Financial and Managerial Accounting, and Auditing I and II, in the undergraduate Honors Accountancy Program, as well as the Masters of Accountancy and MBA Programs. Lisa was nominated by her students for the 1993-1994 Excellence in Teaching Award and She also served as Faculty Advisor for Beta Alpha Psi. In 1994 Lisa accepted a full-time teaching position with the College of DuPage where she has taught Financial and Managerial Accounting, Audit I and II, and Consolidations. She has also served as the Accounting Program Coordinator for 16 years and was responsible for the curriculum development for the Traditional Classroom, Internet and Hybrid Delivery formats. She was also responsible for the managing and staffing of 20 part-time faculty and providing leadership and oversight to the Accounting Program Advisory Board. While Lisa was the Coordinator, the Accounting Program received the 2002 Business Achievement Award for the Advanced Accounting Program at the College of DuPage. Other awards received by Lisa while at the College of DuPage include the 2007 Spirit of Service Award, "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" for 1998 and 2003-2006, the Most Outstanding Business and Services Faculty for 2001, and was nominated by students from 1997-2000 for the Most Outstanding Faculty College Wide. In 2002 Lisa was the Illinois CPA Society Educator of the Year. In June of 2011 Lisa graduated from Northern Seminary with a Master of Divinity. In April of 2012 Lisa was ordained as a Pastor through Christ Church of Oak Brook and the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference. Lisa currently serves at Christ Church as an Assisting Pastor of Worship and Teaching/Preaching in various ministries.Email Lisa. |

Natalie ChurykFinancial Accounting and Reporting Natalie Churyk: joined the NIU faculty in 2001 as an Assistant Professor of Accountancy. Natalie received her Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina and her M.B.A. and B.S. from California State University, Long Beach. She has been a CPA since 1995. Prior to coming to NIU, Natalie had four years of collegiate teaching experience as a doctoral student for which she was awarded The Darla Moore School of Business Teaching Award for graduate assistants and the University-wide Educational Foundation Outstanding Teaching Award for Graduate Assistants. Professor Churyk has also won a graduate student research award from Decision Sciences Institute. Natalie is a member of the American Accounting Association, American Institute of CPAs, and Illinois CPA Society. She teaches financial accounting and her current research interests include mergers and acquisitions, financial reporting, and more specifically, goodwill, an area in which she has been published. Doug ClintonBusiness Environment and Concepts Doug Clinton: Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Arlington, CPA. Dr. Clinton joined the faculty at NIU in the fall of 2001 and is currently a professor. Prior to coming to NIU, Doug had nine years of collegiate teaching experience. Doug teaches managerial accounting in the undergraduate and graduate programs. He has published articles in several academic and professional journals, including: Behavioral Research in Accounting; Advances in Accounting; Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin; Journal of Strategic Performance Measurement; Journal of Accounting Education; Advances in Management Accounting; Management Accounting; Management Accounting Quarterly; Corporate Finance Review, and Journal of Cost Management. Bill CummingsBusiness Environment and Concepts Bill Cummings: CPA, CDP, Ph.D. from the University of Missouri, has participated in NIU CPA Review since 1997. Dr. Bill Cummings is Professor Emeritus at NIU having retired from the full-time Accountancy faculty in 2007. He continues as a part-time visiting professor teaching in the NIU-CPA program and in the NIU MAS and MBA programs. Prior to NIU, Bill taught accounting and IT courses at Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, and the University of Missouri-Columbia. Bill received his B.S. and M.A.S. degrees from Illinois State and his PhD degree from the University of Missouri. He is a registered CPA in Illinois and also holds the Certificate in Data Processing. While at NIU, Bill has taught Accounting Information Systems at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, cost/managerial accounting in the BBA and MBA programs, and information systems for the OMIS department. Bill has published a number of articles on accounting and systems topics in such professional journals as The Journal of Accountancy and Management Accounting Quarterly. He has also been a frequent presenter at regional and national professional meetings and conferences. Bill served for four years as an associate editor and member of the board for the American Journal of Business. From 1999 to 2001, Bill served as president-elect and program chair, president, and past-president of the Midwest Region of the American Accounting Association (AAA). He also served a two year term as treasurer of the Teaching and Curriculum Section of the AAA and three years on the AAA Council representing the Midwest Region. Tim DimondAudit and Attestation Tim Dimond: CPA, B.S. Accountancy, University of Illinois – Urbana 1981; MBA, DePaul University – Chicago 1994; Tim joined the NIU faculty in 2002. He currently teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses, including Financial Statement Auditing, International Accounting, Financial Statement Analysis, Financial Accounting Concepts and SEC Reporting and Corporate Governance. Prior to joining the NIU faculty, Tim served as Chief Financial Officer for a publicly-traded information technology services firm. Prior to that, Tim served as Director of Financial Reporting for a multi-billion dollar diversified manufacturing and services provider. Camille EstermanRegulation Camille Esterman: CPA, EA. Adjunct Faculty at College of DuPage, and associate with Lawrence J. Ollearis & Associates. Camille received a BA in LAS with honors at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She currently teaches Federal Income Taxes and Principles of Accounting at COD. She is an enrolled agent (EA) with the Internal Revenue Service since 1989 and was honored for having one of the top twenty scores nationally. She passed the CPA exam in 1999 and won an EXCEL award. Over the past 25 years, she has lectured at retirement seminars for major corporations, presented tax topics at workshops for the unemployed, advised groups of small business owners on tax issues and presented new tax law seminars to the general public. Jeannie Folk Audit and Attestation Jeannie Folk: CPA. Professor of Accounting at College of DuPage. Jeannie earned a BBA, major in public accounting, from Loyola University Chicago and a MAS from Northern Illinois University. As a general practice Audit Manager for Coopers & Lybrand (now part of PricewaterhouseCoopers) from 1977 through 1989, she developed the firm's internal control questionnaire for the banking industry and was one of the first managers to successfully transition into her new role as a working mother. A full-time faculty member at College of DuPage since 1991, Jeannie teaches Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Auditing I, and Auditing II. She proposed the development of COD's online accounting program and developed the first five online accounting classes in 1999. IN addition to teaching in the classroom at COD, she also teaches four of those classes in an online setting. After having taken one or more of her online classes through COD, a number of NIU CPA Review candidates get to meet her for the first time in a NIU AUDIT, BEC, or REG review session. Jeannie is member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and Illinois CPA Society (ICPAS). She is a past member of ICPAS CPA Exam Transition Task Force, Outstanding Educator Task Force, and its Ethics Committee, and helped develop the ICPAS Brochure, Searching for Answers. The Uniform CPA Exam Overview and FAQs. She is also a member of the Illinois Board of Examiners (IBOE) Educators Advisory Task Force and the IBOE Educational Requirements Focus Group, which was formed to help the IBOE develop implementation guidelines for the new educational requirements effective in 2013. During Fall 2010, Jeannie worked with the IBOE with regards to the ethics requirement for CPA Exam candidates and the implementation of the new educational requirements. She is a past member of Board of Director of Teachers of Accounting at Two-Year Colleges. Jeannie was the Treasurer and a member of the Board of Trustees at the St. Charles Library for 14 years. She is one of the founding directors of Lazarus House, a homeless shelter in St. Charles, Illinois, and served as a member of Loan Committee of DuPage Credit Union. On an ongoing basis, Jeannie volunteers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and through Chicago Cares. An accomplished writer, Jeannie co-authored a textbook (Introduction to Managerial Accounting by Folk, Garrison, and Noreen © 2002 McGraw-Hill), and has authored or developed in excess of 45 study guides, instructor's manuals, interactive study guides (on CD-ROM), and web-based interactive study guides. She has been honored with the Coopers & Lybrand Mentor in Excellence Award, a Beta Alpha Psi Award, the ICPAS Outstanding Educator Award, and the ICPAS Spirit of Service Award. Email Jeannie. |

Barb Fox Business Environment and Concepts Barb Fox: CPA, B.S. Accountancy, Illinois State University (1979), M.A.S., Northern Illinois University (1992). Barb joined the NIU faculty in 2000 and her primary responsibility is teaching in the UBUS Business Core Applications Seminar. She also serves as an instructor for the Department of Accountancy and she began teaching in the NIU CPA Review in 2005. In the past, she has also taught international taxation in the MAS and MST programs, and financial accounting principles in the NIU MBA program. Prior to joining NIU, she worked for DEKALB Genetics Corporation and Monsanto Company where she held staff and management positions in both Corporate Tax and Financial Reporting. DEKALB Genetics Corporation (now part of Monsanto), is a worldwide leader in agricultural genetics and seed biotechnology. She is a member of the AICPA, and the Illinois CPA Society. Debra Hopkins Audit and Attestation Debra Hopkins: CPA, CIA. Debra received a BBA, major emphasis in accounting, from the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh and a MAS from Northern Illinois University. She was director of the highly acclaimed NIU CPA Review from 1991-2012, and a key review faculty member since 1988. Debra has public accounting experience with Arthur Young (now Ernst & Young, LLP) and Grant Thornton, LLP. She chaired the Illinois CPA Society Audit and Assurance Services senior technical committee, served as an Illinois Representative to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Council, and chaired the Illinois CPA Society Board of Directors. She is author of Wiley's Get Motivated, You Can Pass the CPA Exam. She was the 1997 recipient of the Illinois CPA Society's Outstanding Accounting Educator award. Under her guidance, NIU graduates have ranked in the top five passing rates for the auditing section of the CPA exam more times than any other university in the United States. She consults and does specialized accounting and audit training for several of the top 25 CPA firms in the nation. Chih-Chen LeeAudit and Attestation Chih-Chen Lee is the HSBC Professor of Accountancy in the Department of Accountancy, Northern Illinois University. She obtained her Ph.D. in Accounting from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She is a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) and CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner). In addition, she is a member of the American Accounting Association, Illinois CPA Society, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, Institute of Internal Auditors, and Information Systems Audit and Control Association. Chih-Chen's main teaching and research area is in Forensic Accounting. She started teaching Forensic Accounting in 2002 and has made numerous presentations in conferences and workshops. She has published articles in both academic and professional journals including: Accounting Horizons, Journal of Business Ethics, Behavioral Research in Accounting, Journal of Information Systems, International Journal of Auditing, Journal of Forensic & Investigative Accounting, Advances in Behavioral Accounting Research, International Journal of Finance, and Strategic Finance. Chih-Chen has been actively involved in Forensic & Investigative Accounting (FIA) section of American Accounting Association since its inception in 2009. Currently she chairs the Publications committee in the FIA section and is a member of several other AAA committees. Chih-Chen serves on the editorial board of Journal of Forensic & Investigative Accounting and received Sally Webber Excellence in Research in Accountancy in 2008, the Burge Family Faculty Fellowship for 2010-2011. Chih-Chen has received several teaching awards for her teaching performance and the most recent one is the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award, both at the department level and college level in 2011. |

Curt NortonFinancial Accounting and Reporting Curt Norton: is a Professor Emeritus at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. He currently is a faculty member at Arizona State University but continues to teach in NIU’s CPA Review program. He earned his Ph.D. from Arizona State University in 1976, his M.B.A. from the University of South Dakota, and his B.S. from Jamestown College, North Dakota. His list of publications include articles in The Accounting Review, Accounting Horizons, The Journal of Accounting Education, Journal of Accountancy, Journal of Corporate Accounting, Journal of the American Taxation Association, CPA Journal and many others. He also has been co-author of two textbooks for Introductory Financial Accounting and an Intermediate Accounting text. In 1988-89, Dr. Norton received the University Excellence in Teaching Award, the highest university-wide teaching recognition at NIU. For many years, he has taught in the CPA Review program and is also a consultant and has conducted seminars and training programs for public accounting firms, governmental agencies, banks, utilities, and other entities. Tamara Phelan Business Environment and Concepts Tamara Phelan: Ph.D., CPA, CMA, CPIM, joined the faculty at NIU in 2002. She teaches Managerial Accounting as well as the NIU CMA Review course. She has also taught Accounting Information Systems, Financial Accounting and CIA Review. Tamara is the Director of the Academic Internship Program in Accountancy. She is an active faculty member in the NIU College of Business Experience Learning Center (ELC), having served as a coach for eight project teams. Prior to coming to NIU, Tamara was a Partner in the Management Consulting Practice at Ernst & Young. During her 11 years at E&Y, her responsibilities included new account development, sales, service delivery and staff development. Her teaching experience includes training both E&Y staffers and client teams regarding Cost Management, Activity-Based Costing, Performance Measurement, Data Warehousing Principles and Accounting Information Systems. Tamara's professional experience also incorporates roles as Cost Analyst and Payroll Manager for a major domestic steel producer and Compensation Manager for a 700-bed teaching hospital. Tamara earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Valparaiso University and a Master's in Management (MM) from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. Don TidrickAudit and Attestation Don Tidrick: Ph.D., CPA, CMA, CIA. Don joined the faculty of NIU in the fall of 2000 and was named the recipient of the Deloitte Professorship in 2005. Don received his Ph.D. and B.S.B.A. degrees from The Ohio State University and his M.B.A. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Don worked as a senior auditor at the firm now known as KPMG before pursuing his Ph.D. and an academic career. He is a member of the Academy of Accounting Historians, American Accounting Association, American Institute of CPAs, Illinois CPA Society, the Institute of Internal Auditors, and the Institute of Management Accountants. |

David WadeRegulation David Wade: B.S. from Grinnell College, M.A. from Duquesne University, and J.D. from the University of Iowa. An Associate Professor at NIU, Professor Wade has participated in the NIU CPA Review since 1992.
